2011-11-07 Elbrus is open! |
Elbrus area is open for all tourists officially. National Anti-terrorism Committee of Russia canceled the regime of counter-terrorism operations from 18.00 of 05 November 2011 on all territory of Elbrus region. We remind that in April 15, 2011 Elbrus was closed completely for all tourists including Russians.

2011-07-08 Elbrus south classical route is still closed |
Elbrus south classical route is still closed. Though some militaries left the Baksan valley there are still 3 check points left in Elbrus area. They are not very strict now and some tourists could go through without stopping. But officially Elbrus area is closed. It seems this all summer the militaries will stay on their posts and hopefully in winter they will feel cold and leave Elbrus area. With north route to Elbrus is strange situation. It was open till 1st June but when tourists started to arrive to north Elbrus more and more, very fast and without any reason appeared militaries post. Officially its not closed but on the way to Jili-su springs near tour-base Dolina Narzanov one check point stops tourists. There are other roads leading to Juli-su springs round the militaries but very difficult and tiresome. So as you can guess more militaries are appearing on other roads also as more tourists arrive to North Elbrus. With this new conditions and difficult paths we recommend planning Elbrus climb from north only to climbers with very good physical condition, training and experience.

2011-05-30 Absolute inconsistency in decisions and promises |
Russian government has very prevailed habit to say one thing and to do another. Without explanation or any reason now North side of Elbrus is also closed though all this time we were convinced that it will be open. Sorry for emotions. Its derision, mockery over local people, tourists, climbers from all over the world.

North side of Elbrus is Zolski area which is open and no limits there. Officially is closed Baksan area and Elbrus area which are
south side and where regime of counter-terrorism operation is active.
The cofirmation is given by National Anti-terrorism Committee of Russia Operational Headquarters in city Nalchik.
